Isaiah 58: Fasting

Feb 24, 2026    Pastor Steve Finley

Are you going through the motions of faith without letting it transform your heart? This week we explored Isaiah 58 and discovered what God really wants from our spiritual practices.

The Israelites were fasting, sacrificing, and following all the rituals—but God said their hearts weren't in it. They were performing religion to look holy, not to draw near to Him. Sound familiar? Jesus warned against the same thing in Matthew 6, telling us not to fast for show, but in secret before our Father.

True fasting isn't about impressing others or manipulating God like a vending machine. It's about humility, repentance, and seeking His will. When we fast properly, God says we should use what we save to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the oppressed. That's when He hears us. That's when our light breaks forth like the morning.

Is your spiritual life authentic, or just ritual? God is looking for hearts that genuinely seek Him, not religious performances.
