Sola Scriptura

Mar 30, 2026    Pastor Steve Finley

How do we know what's truly Scripture? And can we trust the Bible alone as our authority?

This week we concluded our Five Solas series by diving into Sola Scriptura—Scripture alone as our infallible rule of faith. We explored the powerful truth that Jesus Himself affirmed the 39-book Old Testament canon, holding the Pharisees accountable to "what is written." The early church fathers like Augustine and John Chrysostom taught that Scripture is our ultimate standard, not human tradition or institutional authority.

Here's the remarkable part: we don't need a church hierarchy to tell us what Scripture is. The New Testament writers affirmed each other's writings as Scripture—Peter acknowledged Paul, Paul quoted Luke, and the direct disciples of Jesus gave us the foundation we can trust. What's written in God's Word is sufficient to equip us completely for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The gospel unites us across denominational lines. If you agree with Scripture, you're standing on solid ground.
