Genesis 7

Most of us grew up with the cute version of Noah's Ark -- the refrigerator magnet, the cartoon animals, the little rainbow. But Genesis 7 gives us something far more sobering. The flood was not a gentle rain. It was the fountains of the deep breaking open, the earth tearing itself apart, judgment poured out on a world that had hardened its heart beyond return.

And yet, in the middle of that wrath, God shut the door of the ark himself. His mercy and his judgment moved at the same time.

God is not cute. He is holy, righteous, and fiercely loving. The same God who sealed Noah in the ark has made a way through Christ to seal you by his Spirit. His desire, as 2 Peter 3 reminds us, is that none should perish. That invitation is still open -- but another judgment is coming. Make sure you are on the right side of it.
