Genesis 1: The Beginning of Everything

Why is there something instead of nothing? The answer is not a what — it is a who. From the very first verse of Genesis, God establishes himself as the only explanation for existence itself: timeless, eternal, omnipresent, and the creator of all things out of nothing.

This week we opened the book of beginnings, exploring what Genesis 1 has meant to Jews and Christians across thousands of years of history. From Augustine to Justin Martyr, believers have wrestled with these ancient words — and yet every serious interpreter has landed on the same foundation: in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

The greatest discovery in Genesis 1 is not simply how the world began, but why. God created a functioning universe, made mankind in his image, and embedded the story of redemption into the very structure of creation — pointing us toward Christ.
