The Trinity and Victory

Standing Firm When the World Pushes Back: Finding Victory in Christ
The Christian life was never promised to be easy. In fact, Scripture makes it abundantly clear that following Jesus means walking a path that often runs counter to the world around us. Yet within that challenging reality lies a profound truth: we're on the winning team, and the outcome has already been decided.
The Reality of Opposition
In John 15:18-27, Jesus doesn't sugarcoat what His followers can expect. He tells His disciples plainly: "If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you." This isn't pessimism—it's preparation. Jesus lived perfectly, without a single moment of hypocrisy or sin, and yet He faced arrest, mockery, and crucifixion. If the world rejected perfection itself, why would we expect better treatment when we stumble and fall short daily?
The sobering reality is that Christian persecution isn't just ancient history. Right now, in places like Nigeria, thousands of believers are dying for their faith—not for their political views, not for their wealth, but simply because they bear the name of Jesus. The 20th century stands as the bloodiest in human history for Christians, and persecution continues today in various forms across the globe.
But here's what makes this different from mere tragedy: Jesus predicted it. He told His disciples, "A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you." When we face opposition for standing on biblical truth, we're actually fulfilling prophecy. We're walking exactly where Jesus said we would walk.
The Encouragement Hidden in Warning
Within Jesus's warning lies a beautiful promise: "If they kept my word, they will keep yours also." Yes, there's an enemy. Yes, the world will push back. But there's also a team—people who will hear the gospel, respond to truth, and join in the mission of expanding God's kingdom.
The book of James captures this perspective perfectly: "Count it all joy when you fall into various trials." When opposition comes because we're preaching the gospel and standing for truth, it's actually confirmation that we're running in the right direction. The resistance means we're doing something that matters.
The Trinitarian Foundation of Our Hope
Jesus's words in John 15:26 reveal something profound about the nature of our redemption: "When the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify of me." In one verse, we see the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit working in perfect unity for our salvation.
Understanding the Trinity isn't just theological exercise—it's the roadmap of redemption itself. The Holy Spirit precedes, distinctly, from the Father through the Son, and The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and testifies about Jesus. Jesus declared Himself "the way, the truth, and the life"—the only path to the Father. So the Spirit leads us to the Son, who is the only way to the Father. This divine choreography is how God rescues humanity.
The Trinity has been debated throughout church history, sometimes causing painful divisions. But perhaps we need to approach these mysteries with more humility. We're trying to understand a Being who exists in dimensions beyond our comprehension. It's like a character in a book trying to fully grasp the mind of the author—the author understands the character completely, but the character can never fully contain the author's reality.
C.S. Lewis offered a helpful analogy: as you add dimensions to reality, single objects become more complex. A line in one dimension becomes a square in two dimensions, which becomes a cube in three dimensions. If God exists beyond our four-dimensional reality and is infinitely more real than we are, it makes sense that His nature would be more complex than our single-person-single-being existence.
Death Has Already Lost
Here's the game-changer: the enemy's strongest weapon has already been defeated. Death—the ultimate threat, the final fear—was conquered at the resurrection. This changes everything about how we face opposition.
When culture shifts away from biblical values, when Christians face cancellation for standing on truth, when it looks like all the chips are down—remember whose team you're on. You're playing for the God who defeated death itself. The second half of the game is already decided.
This doesn't mean we won't face setbacks. We'll commit penalties. We'll lose yardage. Individual players might get taken off the field through persecution or martyrdom. But the team wins because Jesus already secured the victory. The mission extends far beyond any one person.
Bearing Witness From the Beginning
Jesus concluded His preparation speech with these words: "And you also will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning." The mission didn't end with Jesus's death, resurrection, or ascension. It continued through the apostles and flows down to us today through their testimony.
We are the church because of their word. The gospel reached us because they stood firm when everything looked lost. They bore witness even when it cost them everything, because they knew the truth: death had been defeated, and eternal life was secured.
Keep Fighting, Keep Digging
When it looks like the enemy is winning, when it seems like the culture has completely turned away from God, when standing for truth becomes increasingly costly—keep fighting. Keep digging. The victory is already won.
We're not fighting for victory; we're fighting from victory. The resurrection proved that God's power is greater than anything this world can throw at us. Our role isn't to secure the win—it's to remain faithful to the One who already secured it.
The world may hate us, just as it hated Jesus. But we stand in the reality that we're already on the winning side. Death, the enemy's ultimate weapon, has been defeated. And if death itself couldn't stop Jesus, then nothing the world offers can ultimately defeat His church.
So stand firm. Speak truth. Love boldly. The game is already won, and we have the privilege of playing for the greatest Coach in history—the One who defeated death and promised that His kingdom would have no end.
