Luke 4:31-39

What happens when the spiritual realm collides with the ordinary? In Luke 4:31-39, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum and the people are already astonished at his authority over Scripture. Then a demon interrupts everything, crying out in fear, "I know who you are, the Holy One of God." The spiritual realm itself testifies to who Jesus is.

Jesus silences the demon with a word. Then he heals Peter's mother-in-law with a word. Divine authority over Scripture, over the spiritual realm, over the physical world, all on display in one passage.

And what is the response of the one who is healed? She gets up and serves. That is the model for all of us. When we encounter the mercy and healing of Jesus, the natural response is to love God and love the people around us.
